I am pleased that Jeff Heglie so quickly responded in such a positive fashion about actual Peace House activities. Mr. Barickman's letter was filled with inference and innuendo with no specific examples. If he had attended the Bush event in Jacksonville, for example, he could not have truthfully made the far-fetched claims he made about the event. Was he really trying to say that Peace House was involved in the flag vandalism a few weeks ago? The suggestion surpasses credibility. To go from these local events to the evils of Nazism was not only over-generalized and misplaced, but it obscured the fact that Mr. Barickman really had nothing specific to say. As a member of the Peace House board, former director, and as an early participant in its formation, I can say that Peace House has always espoused Gandhian principles of nonviolence. Our approach has always been to melt the hearts of our opponents and to resist with open arms the oppressive policies of our government. We value dialogue and communication and work for a world in which war is not the first policy choice of our leaders. We want to raise awareness of the global issues of peace and justice that affect us all, and also to act locally in putting our values to practice. Our programs include counter--military recruitment, conscientious objectors support, Uncle Food's Diner, and the Peace Gardens. We have offered nonviolence training now for more than 20 years, and serve as a nonviolent resource for others conducting political campaigns. I ask community members to stay engaged with Peace House and help us create a society that reflects who we are as a people. What a tribute to this community that people pay to have an organization like this here. The Peace House Board is now conducting a major donor campaign and I hope that readers will support us as we go forward.
