Ashland Ski Area and a small army of local volunteers are busy this week reminding us all of the benefits of having a functioning ski resort nearby. The Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association is holding its 2016 alpine state championships at Mount Ashland. That means 500 skiers, their families and fans are staying here, eating here and helping the local economy. The competition started Thursday and wraps up today with the girls giant slalom and boys slalom. Mount Ashland last hosted the OISRA championships in 2007. Local ski coach Gary King, who pushed to bring the event here this year, praised local sponsors for stepping up and supporting the event. The ski area has struggled for two years with little or no snow, and a good snow year coupled with a statewide competition will help the nonprofit, community-owned resort stay afloat. The ski area operates close to the margin even in good years, and community support is vital. Opponents of a planned expansion did not help the ski area's fortunes by bringing lawsuits that caused Mt. Ashland to spend far too much in legal fees. Some of the same people who have fought the ski area also oppose timber harvests, and are fond of arguing that the future benefits of public lands will come from tourism and recreation, not resource extraction. The state ski championships are a prime example of the kind of economic boost public lands can provide. That wouldn't be possible without a healthy ski area.
