Loquvam honored for community service By Jennifer Nitson Ashland Daily Tidings The mood was jovial and irreverent as Mayor Alan DeBoer presented Marty Loquvam with Ashland's Certificate of Recognition of Service. "Are you enjoying being mayor?" Loquvam asked DeBoer as they lounged in the living room in her Mountain Meadows home. "Not really," DeBoer replied. When DeBoer presented the plaque he knelt before Loquvam and she pretended to swoon. "What was that you said about bringing the mayor to his knees?" quipped Peg Crowley, executive director of the Community Health Center of Ashland. On a more serious note, DeBoer expressed the community's and his own deep gratitude for the many years of tireless service Loquvam offered Ashland. "You've done a lot," DeBoer said. "I'm sorry to see you go, you've been an inspiration." Loquvam was one of the original residents at Mountain Meadows, having moved into her home there in March of 1997. Now, three of her children hustle around her house, wrapping and packing their mother's belongings as she prepares to move to Lake Oswego to be near her daughter Julie. Three of Loquvam's five children were present Friday, and DeBoer addressed them directly. "You should be very proud of your mother," DeBoer said. "She's got a lot of friends in the community that are very proud of what she's done." The list of Loquvam's community service activities is extensive. She was active with Peace House for many years, serving for 10 years on the board of directors. Loquvam also helped found Ashland Cottage Creations, a women's craft co-op. "We did some projects for women," Loquvam said. "Very talented women who had no outlet for their talent. We had sales for them and we helped them find the courage to strike out on their own." She has actively participated in the League of Women Voters, Church Women United, and the national social justice group, Pax Christi. Perhaps her most significant contribution to the community was through her work with and generous support of Community Health Center, which has branches in Ashland, Medford, and White City. For 23 years Loquvam supported the health center in various ways through volunteer work, as a board member, and by serving on the president's advisory committee. She also made a significant contribution as a benefactor to the center. "There is no decision after 1990 that does not have Marty's imprint on it," said Crowley. "It's going to take 100 Martys to replace this one lady and what she's done in the community. She has lifted us up and kept us afloat with time and talent."
