AKA students earned 12 first-place trophies at the tournament, including Alexandra Acevedo's underbelt grand championship. Acevedo also won the high kick competition, the 9-10 traditional forms, the underbelt creative musical forms and placed third in the 9-12 traditional weapon forms. Also earning tournament titles for AKA were: Elaine Sayre (advanced adult women's sparing); Carly Joss (13-14 traditional forms, 12-17 traditional weapons kata); Daisy Barnard (7-8 traditional forms, 7-8 traditional weapon forms); Elie Hersch (9-10 traditional forms); Navarro Garcia (4-6 flag sparring); Alex Stephens (adult sparring); and a underbelt team forms title for Acevedo, Joss and Barnard. Also for Ashland Karate Academy, which is headed up by Hanshi Jerry Piddington, Tim Morton placed second in adult senior men's sparring, Pepper Barnard second in 4-6 traditional forms, Abe Lungren second in 9-10 traditional forms and Tashi Michael Bailey second in adult black belt traditional weapon forms. For a complete list of AKA awards visit ashlandkarateacademy.com.   Prep Track and Field At Eugene, Wyatt Thompson-Siporen had three of Ashland's seven wins as the Grizzly boys placed second with 67 points to Marist (86) in a three-way meet on Wednesday at Marist High School. The Ashland girls, led by Hope Baldrica and Kelsey McKelvey, finished third with 52 points behind Marist (65) and Springfield (57). Thompson-Siporen won the discus (151 feet, 10 inches), the javelin (179-0) and the pole vault (14-6), setting personal records in the latter two. Also for the Ashland boys, Shashi Penn won the long jump (20-6) and was runner-up in the 100 (11.78 seconds), Cole Compeau won the 800 (2:07.19), Mason Dow won the 300 hurdles (46.42) and Mel Elshalom won the triple jump (42-2 1/2). For the Ashland girls, Baldrica won the 400 (1:03.01) and the long jump (15-7 1/4), McKelvey won the javelin (119-3) and took third in the triple jump (27-4 1/4) and Christine Impara won the high jump (4-8). Also for the Grizzlies, Laurel Watson, Ellie Stanek, Cassidy Walters and Baldrica teamed up  to win the 4x400 relay (4:22.66).   Prep Football Ashland High linebacker Parker Layton will be the Grizzlies' lone representative in the 2015 Les Schwab Tires Bowl, the annual senior all-star game slated for June 20 at Hillsboro Stadium. Layton was a Midwestern League all-star on both sides of the ball for the Grizzlies, who advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals. The Les Schwab Bowl features the top graduating seniors from the northern part of the state versus their counterparts from the south. Layton will represent team South.
