LOCAL ROUNDUP O'Brien, Kim claim MWL doubles title Ashland's Knecht falls in singles final; AHS boys win team title Comment By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted May. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Vika O’Brien has a history of performing well when the pressure’s on and she did that again with her new doubles partner Friday to lead the Ashland High girls tennis team in the Midwestern League district tournament at the University of Oregon in Eugene. O’Brien, a senior who won three straight Class 5A state doubles titles with former teammate Hanna Greenberg, teamed up with Anne Kim to claim the MWL doubles title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over second-seeded Caitlin Carr and Sierra Cassaro of Ridgeview. O-Brien and Kim, who trounced a Marist team 6-1, 6-0 in a semifinal match played earlier in the day, entered the tournament as the top seeds and lived up to that billing, winning all three of their matches in straight sets to improve their chances of landing a high seed in next week’s state tournament. The doubles title helped the Ashland girls place third in the final team standings with 22 points. Marist won with 43 points and Ridgeview was a distant second with 23. The Ashland boys didn't claim a singles or doubles title but captured the team title with 35 points. Marist was second with 26. Ashland’s top female singles player second-seeded Ashley Knecht, also advanced to Friday’s district final with an easy semifinal win but lost to top-seeded Madisyn Bryant of Marist in the final, 6-1, 6-0. Ashland also advanced a singles player and doubles team to the finals in the MWL boys tournament, also played at the University of Oregon tennis courts, but they wound up settling for second. Second-seeded singles player Mischa Kirby beat Brett Blundell of Ridgeview in the semis, 6-0, 6-3, but fell to top-seeded Nathan Hampton of Churchill in the championship match, 6-1, 6-1. In the boys doubles tournament, Ashland’s second-seeded team of Rox Rogers and Nur Shelton lost to the No. 1-seeded team of Austin Tyner and A.J. Bartko of Marist, 6-1, 6-0. The 5A state tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday at the West Hills Racquet Club in Portland and Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. College Track and Field Sixteen Southern Oregon University Raiders have qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala. The field, released Friday by the NAIA office, includes 13 SOU men and three women in 11 events. Senior Amelia Maguin, the women’s athlete of the meet at last week’s Cascade Conference championships, will enter nationals as the top seed in the 400-meter hurdles and 17th seed in the 100-meter hurdles. Maguin was the 400-hurdle runner-up each of the last two years. Returning All-Americans Markus Sanders and Danny Parks lead the way for the Southern Oregon men, as Sanders is ranked third in the hammer and fourth in the discus and Parks third in the discus and 16th in the hammer. Zach Boyd Helm is the No. 3 seed in the 800, Kevin Jorgensen No. 4 in the 1,500 and Dylan Alexander No. 3 in the 5-kilometer run. Eric Ghelfi is seeded third in the 10K and 12th in the 5K. The Southern Oregon men are ranked fourth in this week’s USTFCCCA computer rankings a year after placing ninth at nationals. The SOU women placed 14th at nationals last year. College Wrestling Southern Oregon University NAIA All-Americans Tyler Cowger, Dalton Urrutia and Garrett Urrutia have been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s All-Academic team. Dalton Urrutia, the 157-pound national runner-up, ranked eighth on the list among 29 with a 3.50 grade-point average, while Cowger ranked 13th (3.29) and Garrett Urrutia 19th (3.19). “Those are three really hard-working guys, and this just shows that you can do both things well, school and wrestling, if you put in the effort,” SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. At a team banquet Thursday, Ritchey named Dalton Urrutia the team’s most inspirational, Devin Poppen the freshman of the year and Brock Gutches, who claimed his fourth straight national title, the wrestler of the year.
