And I protest the decision of Valley agencies not to insist that campaign officials pay a considerable portion of the $200,000. This was a purely political campaign visit. Although I recognize that it may be necessary to provide additional security for a sitting president, I consider it complete foolishness to pay this total cost ourselves. At the very least, we should split the costs with the Bush campaign. I must also protest the rough action of the security forces against the peaceful assemblage of our citizens in Jacksonville. This was inexcusable. The president could jolly well have waited a few minutes until the sidewalks were cleared quietly and respectfully. Virginia C. Lemon Ashland Send 'em the bill Excuuuuuse me! Let me get this straight, the county is picking up the tab of $200,000 for President Bush's stay in Jacksonville? The same campaign visit that disallowed Constitutional rights to peaceful assembly on the town's streets. The very same visit that turned away three local schoolteachers at the rally with tickets because they wore T-shirts stating "Support Our Civil Liberties." My grandchildren's schools have been seriously cut back in this Valley, as have school lunches, teacher's aids, and social programs too numerous to mention. With those who support this president's re-election donating $250,000 per person and large corporations infinitely more, don't you think this campaign could pay not only for it's protection, but for the damage it does as it comes into our hometowns? I say, send 'em the bill!
