ASHLAND Aquatics backer announces write-in candidacy for Parks & Rec board Only two candidates filed for three positions on commission; Mike Gardiner wants to fill third slot By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 24, 2014 @ 6:29 pm By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 24, 2014 @ 6:29 pm » RELATED CONTENT • Second write-in candidate makes commission position a con... • Work on new park underway • Two races set for council positions • City selects new Parks and Recreation director • Ashland Parks and Recreation adopts a new logo • Candidates emerge for city positions » Social News When the filing deadline passed, position 4 of the five-member Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission was left without a candidate for November's election. Now, local business owner Matthew Miller is conducting a write-in campaign for the position. The department oversees 785 acres of parkland in Ashland and offers a variety recreational opportunities, as well as facility and park rentals. The department is budgeted to have nearly 44 full-time employees with a budget of nearly $16 million for the two-year, 2013-15 period . Mike Gardiner, an appointed incumbent and the sole person to file for position 3, and position 5 incumbent Rick Landt are the sole candidates on the ballot for commissioners and are expected to join current commissioners Jim Lewis and Vanston Shaw on the commission. Lewis and Shaw’s terms expire in 2016. Miller, who owns flytrapstore.com with his wife and is assistant coach for Ashland High School's swim team, hopes to improve aquatics programs in the city. "There's kind of an aquatics crisis in Southern Oregon," he says. "The only pool open year round is the Southern Oregon University pool, and that may be going away. "There's been talk about getting someone active in the aquatics community on the commission, so I had a lot of people ask me to do this." In addition to expanding aquatics options in the city, Miller hopes to restore historic features in Lithia Park, further develop safe and environmentally sensitive trails and provide more dog friendly options in the parks. "I was a big trail user when I moved here, that was our main reason for coming to Ashland," he says. "More things have come on my radar since deciding to run for the position and I'm looking forward to exploring more." Miller graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri in Columbia with a degree in math and Spanish. He then earned his master's degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson in applied mathematics. Miller says that his math degrees have given him the training to analyze large and complex problems.  For more information about the candidate, see www.millerforparkscommission.com .
