Ashland Kiwanis sent five members to offer volunteer help at Special Olympics Oregon annual track and field regional competition on June 6 at Grants Pass High School. The Jackson County program was represented by 43 athletes and 11 volunteer coaches. The Kiwanis members included Sandy Kuykendall, Lola Egan, Ron Parker, and Ted and Judy Sockman. Ashland Kiwanis presented Marie Cabler, Jackson County manager, with a $500 check to help with training and travel expenses for participating athletes.  Then, on June 20, Ashland Kiwanis was represented by volunteer Ron Parker at the Special Olympics Bocce Ball event at U. S. Cellular Field in Medford. The Jackson County program was represented by 25 doubles teams, with six counties participating. There is no cost to athletes for participation in Special Olympics. All funding for equipment, uniforms, practice facilities and travel costs to competitions are raised by volunteers.  To volunteer and get involved with Special Olympics, call the Jackson County program at 541-779-7120 or email [email protected].
