Phillips Field with new, state-of-the-art artificial turf, and the naming of an interim superintendent. Superintendent Jay Hummel announced March 2 that he will resign at the end of this school year. Hummel served ably, but for only three years. The School Board made the right decision in opting to hire an interim replacement while a conducting a thorough search for a new leader. The board has chosen Dr. Suzanne Cusick, who retired as schools superintendent in Longview, Wash., two years ago. Cusick taught in Ashland in the 1980s and her four children graduated from Ashland High School. Not only is Cusick familiar with Ashland — a big advantage for someone taking on the top job on a temporary basis — but she has a master's degree in music literature and vocal performance. Ashland schools are known for the quality of their music and performing arts programs, and a superintendent with a fine arts background will only enhance that reputation. District officials and community supporters broke ground on the new stadium turf April 15 after a fundraising campaign that brought in donations large and small, including a $650,000 check from professional baseball pitcher Jeremy Guthrie that started the ball rolling in 2013. Supporters stepped up to make the replacement a reality for this year's fall sports seasons, carrying on this community's tradition of supporting its schools.
