MEN'S BASKETBALL Beavers get No. 3 seed, host NCAA games Regular-season Pac-12 champs earn second straight tourney bid Comment By Steve Gress Albany Democrat-Herald DailyTidings.com By Steve Gress Albany Democrat-Herald Posted Mar. 16, 2015 at 8:40 PM Updated Mar 16, 2015 at 8:46 PM By Steve Gress Albany Democrat-Herald Posted Mar. 16, 2015 at 8:40 PM Updated Mar 16, 2015 at 8:46 PM » Social News CORVALLIS — Nestled in the center table and dining on some wings and other food at Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday afternoon, the Oregon State women’s basketball players and coaches waited patiently to see their name pop up on one of the numerous big screen televisions. There was little doubt the Beavers, the regular-season Pac-12 champions, were in the NCAA tournament’s field of 64 for the second consecutive season. What may have slightly been in doubt, thanks to two losses in their last three games, was whether the Beavers would receive a top-4 seed and host the first and second rounds. It wasn’t until the final half of the last bracket that the Beavers could exhale and rejoice. Oregon State is the No. 3 seed in the Spokane Regional and will host this Friday and Sunday in Gill Coliseum. “To see your name like that, it’s just something you dream of when you’re little so it’s exciting,” senior Ali Gibson said. Also coming to Corvallis will be No. 6 seed George Washington, No. 11 seed Gonzaga and No. 14 seed South Dakota State. The top seed in the regional is Maryland with Tennessee the No. 2 seed and Duke the No. 4 seed. The Beavers will take on South Dakota State at 2 p.m. Friday while George Washington and Gonzaga meet at 4:30 p.m. The winners face off on Sunday at a time to be determined. “It’s a perfect opportunity,” coach Scott Rueck said. “This team has worked so hard knowing that was a possibility. They’ve talked about it before the season knowing the NCAA changed the rules and the top 16 seeds were going to host, so to fight for one of those spots has been one of their goals all year. To play in front of your home crowd in an NCAA tournament is as good as it gets.” The NCAA changed the rules this season and went back to how it used to be with home institutions hosting first- and second-round games. Four Pac-12 schools — Oregon State, Arizona State, Stanford and California — were selected to host this season. Washington also made the tournament as a No. 6 seed. “It makes sense to me,” Rueck said. “You work hard all year long to be one of those schools that is selected. I think it’s a just reward. If you’re going to be a team that is a lower seed that’s going to upset (a team) you’re going to have to win big games in tough environments any way.” Getting a chance to play home games in front of the home crowd — where Oregon State went 13-1 and averaged 4,167 fans per game— is something Gibson never could have dreamed would happen when she signed with the Beavers four years ago. “When I first came here I was like, all right maybe we will make a run, maybe we will do something great. But to be a 3 seed, playing at home in the NCAA tournament, it’s amazing,” she said. Gibson, for obvious reasons, is a fan of having teams host. “It gives teams something to fight for in the regular season,” she said. “Hopefully it will pay off and hopefully we’ll see a bunch of fans and be able to continue our run.” While the overwhelming feeling was the Beavers would host, it was a bit nerve-racking waiting to the end after losing two of their last three games, including losing to Colorado in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 tournament. “I thought our resume locked us in,” Rueck said. “I didn’t think that there should have been a debate about us. You win a power five conference outright, through the rigors of the regular season, you have one loss in the nonconference schedule and its at Tennessee and its a competitive game. I thought our resume stood for itself.” The Corvallis winner will advance to play next week in Spokane in the regional semifinals. The winner of the regional advances to the Final Four, held this year in Tampa, Fla.
