On Monday, Rogue Valley Community Television, based at Southern Oregon University, began broadcasting the Legislature live on cable channel 30 for the first time. Before, they were shown on a tape-delayed basis one to seven days later, said Kevin Talbert of RVTV. "It gives those interested in legislative issues the chance to keep track without having to go to Salem," he said. "It has been a challenge for someone with a policy issue in Southern Oregon to be educated about Salem. This will be a better way to keep them informed." The broadcasts are being sent by an Internet delivered server, which has been used for several legislative sessions in the Willamette Valley and Portland, Talbert said. After talking about live broadcasts for several years, Talbert was pleased to finally see it running smoothly on Monday. "It's very satisfying," he said. "We think it's another service that cable can provide." A live broadcast test run was done last fall when Gov. Ted Kulongoski announced his budget. Several local state legislators, including Rep. Peter Buckley and Sen. Alan Bates, donated funds to help pay for the equipment. For the duration of the session, times of the live broadcast will vary. Talbert said RVTV will be rebroadcasting daily session activities overnight and on weekends. In the near future, classes at SOU may take advantage of the technology using the live broadcast for discussion in classes such as political science, Talbert said.
