At about 11 p.m., Sherie J. Keller, 47, fired a .22 caliber rifle numerous times from the front porch of her residence at 420 E. Rapp Road, Police Chief Bob Rector said. The bullets hurled into the neighborhood adjacent to the intersection of Rapp Road and Lithia Avenue. A total of 15 spent cartridges were recovered at the scene, Rector said. No injuries were reported. He said they have received reports this morning that two bullet holes were discovered in a nearby home. Officers from the Talent, Ashland, Medford, and Phoenix Police Departments, as well as the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, and the Oregon State Police responded. Officers saw the gunfire and commanded Keller to drop her rifle, Rector said. Keller left the rifle on the porch and entered the residence, where she refused to exit. Rector said officers surrounded the residence and closed off Rapp Road at Highway 99, and at Talent Avenue to traffic. Neighbors were contacted and warned to remain indoors and away from the area. Officers spent several hours attempting to talk to Keller, Rector said. It was discovered she had a 14-year-old son living with her, but he was not at home at the time. Once the police were certain that she was alone and she likely was unarmed, officers entered the home at around 4 a.m. and arrested Keller without incident, Rector said. Keller told police she was trying to shoot a cat, but Rector said she made statements to officers that she had planned to kill herself A note was also discovered at the residence making references to Keller wanting to commit suicide, he said. She is being held without bail.
