Despite not scoring in the second quarter and tallying only two points in the fourth, Ashland defeated Sierra, 42-39, in overtime. The Grizzlies (3-3) play Modesto, Calif., in the consolation championship. Ashland took a comfortable 16-8 first-quarter lead. But the Grizzlies failed to score in the second period and trailed 23-16 at halftime. Ashland found its scoring touch in the third period, outscoring Sierra, 17-7, but went cold again in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies exhibited balanced scoring with six players notching six or more points. Jeff Skinner and Derek Steadmon paced Ashland with eight points each. Steadmon got two of his in overtime when the Grizzlies outscored Sierra, 7-4. Josh Cornelius scored three points in overtime, and David Morris accounted for the Grizzlies' other two OT points. Ashland will open Southern Oregon Conference play on January 6, 2004, against Klamath Union in Klamath Falls. The Grizzlies' next home game will be Jan. 13 against Roseburg.
