Michael Barone, U.S. News & World Report's commentator, (Nov. 9) should have a medal. That Bush's victory was a triumph of love over hate belongs right up there with the Fox slogan that it is "fair and balanced." This report has the Democrats relying on billionaires and paid workers, while the Republicans had to depend on volunteers. Barone somehow didn't notice who big business supported and how much. And then there was that "most egregious" "60 Minutes" story of Bush's Air National Guard duty, most of which was verifiably true, but with some details apparently based on forged documents, which were later acknowledged publicly. But the elaborate "Swift Boat" character assignation reporting that charged Kerry with everything from coward to traitor, that was the basis for a book and got extended TV coverage, apparently escaped Barone's attention. Finally, Barone, decries the failure of the "old media" to report the marvelous progress being made in Iraq and only reports some of the unfortunate developments like troop injuries and fatalities. At any rate, it is good to know that Barone is giving good service to its patrons Rupert Murdoch and former Republican leader Roger Ailes. Harry L. First, thank you. I'm very grateful, and I will do my absolute best to represent our district and work for progress for all Oregonians. Second, please stay involved. It will take all of us working together to make sure we have a state we can be proud to leave to our kids and grandkids. Thanks also to the Tidings for the coverage of all the local campaigns this year. The public debate on the issues is vital, and I greatly appreciate the efforts made to inform and promote discussion.
