Submitted photo �The Land has Eyes� returns for benefit Staff reports The AIFF and Coming Attractions Theatres present the first “Best of the Ashland Independent Film Festival” event. The 2005 audience award finalist, “The Land has Eyes,” returns to the Varsity Theatre in Ashland Friday evening at 6 and 8:15. All proceeds from these screenings will directly benefit the nonprofit AIFF and assist in the production of the 2006 festival (April 6-10). Tickets for the benefit screenings are available now at the Varsity box office. Tickets are $5 for AIFF members and $7.50 for the general public, with no senior discounts for two benefit screenings. More information is at ashlandfilm.org. The message of the ancient Rotuman proverb “The land has eyes and teeth and knows the truth” is a natural lead into World Wellness Weekend. The film was written and directed by Rotuma native Vilsoni Hereniko, and the cast is also from this small Fijian island. In the weeks since “The Land has Eyes” had its West Coast debut at the AIFF, it was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian, and the Hanoi and Singapore film festivals. It opened the Maui Film Festival on Wednesday and is in competition during the Shanghai Film Festival June 10 to 20. Jeannette Paulson-Hereniko, producer of “The Land has Eyes” as well as the founder and former director of the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival, was impressed with the AIFF when she visited with the film and wanted to help the festival. “The Ashland Independent Film Festival is a coup,” she said. “I just thought it was an astonishing event on its own, and when I found out they did for so little resources comparatively — with such a lack of staff — I believe it is a miracle. I felt Ashland was more exciting for a film festival than even Park City (in Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival).” Rotuma is a small island 300 miles from Fiji (although part of Fiji). Hereniko is a world-renowned playwright; in 1997 he was presented the prestigious Elliott Cades Writing Award for his "significant body of work of exceptional quality." His wife, Jeanette, is a former Oregonian who spent 10 years living in Southern Oregon and started the Children's Britt and the Storytelling Guild. The whole cast went to the Sundance Film Festival for the film’s debut; for many, this was the first time they had ever left the island. The USA/FijI feature film, was declared the winner of the Premiere Festival Prize for best overall entry in the inaugural Waiora Maori Film Festival in New Zealand. The Festival screened over 100 feature films, short films and documentaries, including “Whale Rider,” which was named Best Feature Film. The Festival’s top award, sponsored by the National Geographic All Roads Film Project, was presented to Hereniko during the festival’s award ceremony held in the Waiora War Memorial. Cinderella Man Biographical boxing drama about the life of Jim Braddock, a broken down ex-boxer who enters the boxing ring again out of desperation to feed his family during the Depression. He became a hero of the common folk as he battled his way up the ranks. Directed by Ron Howard ("Beautiful Mind"). Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Paul Giamatti. PG-13 for intense boxing violence and some language/144 min. High Tension An isolated farmhouse, two young women, a tenacious killer and the night — sheer gut-wrenching horror. Alternate title: "Switchblade Romance.” Cecile De France, Philippe Nahon, Maiwenn Le Besco. R for graphic bloody killings, terror, sexual content and language (formerly NC-17)/85 min. Honeymooners When Ralph tries to impress Alice by investing their savings in yet another get-rich-quick schemes, he winds up risking his marriage along with his money. Shamed by her village for being poor and the daughter of a wrongly convicted thief, Viki is inspired by the mythical Warrior Woman of her father's stories to bring justice to those who conspired against her father. Lords of Dogtown A group of California surfers takes their dangerous aerial style of surfing to the streets, combine it with skateboarding, and pave the way for what is now referred to as "extreme sports". Madagascar Four zoo animals are shipped back to their homeland by well-meaning humans that believe the wilds will be less stressful for them. But the animals end up on the exotic island of Madagascar. Having been cared for their entire life, they know nothing about survival and must work with the locals to fit in.
