Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey, director of U.S. forest policy has been meeting since mid-February with officials from Florida, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana to address concerns about the threat of a severe, devastating fire season. As a result, Brian Schweitzer, the governor of Montana, as commander in chief of that state’s National Guard, requested that the Pentagon send home all his troops and helicopters stationed in Iraq in order to be prepared to fight “the huge wildfire threat this summer.” Are not the lives, property, timber, and wildlife in the state of Oregon as precious? Is it time to organize an effort in Oregon to appeal to Gov. Ted Kulongoski to make a similar request on behalf of the welfare and safety of all Oregonians? We do not need another Biscuit Fire, possibly of even greater magnitude. Steve Kane Ashland Alexander for school board If it is true that our future lies in the hands of our children, then we want our children (and the children of our neighbors and friends) to be as well educated as possible. If you agree with that statement, I hope that you will vote for Ruth Alexander for a position on the Ashland School Board. I have known Ruth for at least a dozen years, and I know her to be a woman of strength, integrity, and intelligence. Ruth is passionate about education. Her background includes a degree in education from Harvard, many years of volunteer service in the Ashland School district, as well as being the author of several books on math games for children, the creator of after-school tutoring programs, and a counselor for high-risk teens. In addition to her experience and training, I believe that as a school board member Ruth will bring an open mind and the desire work to promote harmony and cooperation in seeking to provide Ashland's children with the highest quality education possible. Please join me in voting for Ruth Alexander for the Ashland School Board. Leslie van Gelder Ashland Alexander has the experience Ruth Alexander is the best choice for Ashland School Board Position 1. I first met Ruth as a parent volunteer in our children’s first grade class. That was 17 years ago, and since that time I have valued Ruth’s active participation and commitment to our children and our schools year after year. Her background in education and writing, along with her work in the schools, led her to write and publish several books on math games. Her interest in Ashland’s schools led her to work on a number of committees: Ashland School District Vision Committee, Parent Advisory Committee, and District K-8 Task Force. Her commitment to providing financial help to our schools led her to become a board member of the Ashland Schools Foundation. And her devotion to our students has fostered her continuing efforts to volunteer as a math tutor. She is smart. She is caring. She is interested in listening to our community and building consensus to solve the problems our schools now face. I believe that our school board is in the midst of some very crucial decisions. I want Ruth there to receive community input and help think through creative solutions. Please join me in voting for Ruth Alexander. Cyndee Wallace Ashland Schools benefit with Alexander How fortunate for our community that Ruth Bell Alexander has decided to run for the Ashland School Board. Ruth has been actively committed to excellence in education for many years. Her involvement is multi-faceted and includes authoring and co-authoring a variety of educational works, most notably the classic best-seller, “Our Bodies Ourselves,” and “Make It Equal,” a wonderful book about an innovative math strategy she developed. Ruth has presented nationwide educational seminars on using math games in the classroom. She has volunteered extensively in our local schools and has taken a leadership role in numerous Ashland educational forums. Of Ruth Alexander’s many strengths, one I particularly admire is her ability to facilitate workable solutions to complex challenges. She is able to listen to varied points of view, synthesize the information presented, prioritize critical issues and then identify common ground solutions that incorporate diverse opinions and points of view. Join me in voting for Ruth Alexander for the Ashland School Board. She is the right choice for promoting strong schools for our children and our community.
