Goldberg, 67, was diagnosed eight years ago with a rare cancer, mesothelioma, most often connected with exposure to asbestos. Doctors recently told him he has about four months to live, but he says the store will carry on. You’ve been in music, mainly selling it, all your life. What drives this? I remember buying 45's when I was 6 and hanging them all over my room and playing “record store.” I was selling them in high school and doing a capella do-wop. I was in the record business in New York City, retail, wholesale, writing liner notes. Diana (his wife of 28 years) and I started our first shop in Florence, Oregon in 1975. We then had a shop in Eugene, but I got tired of the dark gloom there. When we performed in Ashland in 1986, I took a look around, loved the warmth and had to move here. Your shop has been here a long time. What’s your passion for music and what's the secret to the store's success. What does it offer? I always loved rock and roll from the beginning. Personally, I love do-wop most. It’s the forgotten third of rock, so they used to say. But now it’s mostly forgotten. Now that I’m old, I’ve grown to like classical music a lot, especially the baroque. The store offers the whole range of music in CD and record, with movies on DVD, all of it new or used. Also lifestyle items, unusual gifts, T-shirts. It’s collector-oriented. LPs sell well. If I had more space, I’d have a lot more music. What’s going to happen to the store? It’s a group effort — Diana, our daughter Nastassia, 22, the manager, Doug Northcutt, who has been here 15 years. It will continue as it has. Myself, I’ve had a good run and it’s been fun.
