--> --> Deputy fatally wounds motorist HILLSBORO - A Washington County sheriff's deputy fatally wounded a motorist Saturday night after the man sped away to avoid a traffic stop. He was identified as 31-year-old Rodney Ray Layman, of Beaverton. The sheriff's office said Layman sped a few blocks away from the attempted stop to a street that dead-ended at his apartment building. A preliminary investigation shows that Layman was unarmed, said Sandy James, sheriff's office spokeswoman. It appears there was a verbal altercation and Layman got out of his car and approached the patrol car, James said Sunday in a written statement. Witnesses said Layman got out of the truck and put his hands up, according to kgw.com. Layman yelled at the deputy, then walked toward the back of the truck, the witnesses said. The deputy fired two shots, hitting Layman in the chest. Layman had a no-bail felony warrant outstanding from the state of Washington for violation of a release agreement involving drug possession.
