One of the beautiful things about having a semi-wild park is that night is night; we can see the stars from Winburn Way when we get beyond the (too bright) lights of the street. I am one who cannot understand the desire to light the night away, so that we are in a bright bubble that doesn't let us catch a glimpse of the vast night sky. I resist the urge we seem to have to turn nature into a well lit, well-paved theme park. Why not diminish the glare of the street lights that are already in the park, so that people are not blinded by the glare when walking along the street? We are getting way too citified when we lose contact with what makes this a special place: the interface of a relatively unsullied nature with our daily lives. Vanessa Scott Ashland Lantern making was an example of civic feeling I love this town and the people who live in it. I also agree with editor Andrew Bolsinger that Ashland is a town that cares. It was wonderful to see the interest in a lantern-making workshop sponsored by the Ashland Chamber of Commerce held the Saturday before the Festival of Light Parade. In fact, so many people were interested in making a paper mache and willow lantern that we ran out of materials! The Jewelry Studio was most generous with its donation of their gallery space upstairs as the perfect place to hold the workshop. Artist Anneke Raphael led the workshop and Rick Stevens Painting provided the drop cloths to keep us tidy. Thanks to all who helped. All the newly made lanterns and their makers joined the parade right beyond the little fairies, helping to bring light and good will to our town.
