Local resorts have yet to receive their requisite 2 to 3 feet of snowfall to begin operation. As the ski season draws near, the Mt. Ashland Ski Area and Mt. Shasta Ski and Snowboard Resort begin providing daily snow fall updates, encouraging skiers to "think snow." The National Weather Service is making no promises. According to the seven-day forecast, for both areas there is a chance of rain and snow on Thursday developing into a chance of snow on Friday. Mt. Ashland currently has 7 inches, said Katherine Flanagan, the co-marketing director of Mt. Ashland who provides the ski report available at 482-2SKI. Ever optimistic, the resort has been previewing a Nov. 24 opening day, "snow willing." However, in 40 years the resort has only opened 15 times in November, with the average opening day Dec. 10, Flanagan said. This weekend there will be over 200 employees training on the mountain, prepped for work as soon as weather permits. Mt. Shasta's opening day is scheduled for Dec. 17 - again, weather permitting, said Jim Arata, Mt. Shasta controller. Earlier, the mountain reported two feet of snow, but weather whittled it down to about a foot. "In 19 years, we have only been open for one Thanksgiving," Arata said.
