--> --> May 20: Former AHS grad a Pac-10 champion Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland High graduate and current University of Oregon Duck Nick Bakke improved his personal record by 21 feet to take the Pac-10 javelin title Saturday at Washington State University. Bakke, who graduated from AHS in 1999, months after helping the Grizzlies claim their last state football championship, launched a winning throw of 227-3. His previous best was 206-3. Bakke, who was also an all-conference track athlete for the Grizzlies, was filling in at the Pac-10 meet for injured and defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion teammate John Stiegeler. He entered the meet ranked 12th among the conference's javelin throwers, but his new personal record ranks third on the Ducks' all-time list. "I knew we needed the points," Bakke told The Register Guard. "I came in focused on scoring and not the place. I was just concerned about helping the team."
