SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY Dorm leaders learn how to 'PASS' Ashland Fire & Rescue Fire shows proper use of extinguishers as school readies to open Sept. 29 By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am Updated Sep 15, 2014 at 10:20 AM By Ian Hand Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Sep. 15, 2014 @ 12:01 am Updated Sep 15, 2014 at 10:20 AM » RELATED CONTENT • Ashland city employees prepare for emergencies • All of Ashland's Firewise communities renewed in 2013 • Hot Training • Fire-safety essay winners » Social News With fall quarter at Southern Oregon University set to begin Monday, Sept. 29, the resident assistants prepared for students to move in to the residence halls on campus with fire safety training Friday.  The student staff, under the direction of Fire Marshal and Division Chief Margueritte Hickman and Captain Todd Stubbs, participated in drills focusing on escaping a smokey building and using a fire extinguisher.  Ashland Fire and Rescue set up a large propane burner across the street from Shasta Hall for the RAs to practice using a fire extinguisher on a small blaze. Many of the students had never used a fire extinguisher before Friday's training. New RA Justin Norris, a sophomore from Bend, said he now feels prepared to use a fire extinguisher should the situation call for it.  "I hadn't used one before, but it's pretty easy to use," he said. "All I need now is a fire hat." Stubbs stressed that fire extinguishers are meant for smaller fires. "They can get used up pretty quickly," he told the group. "If it doesn't put out the fire, then it's time to leave." Stubbs said an important thing to remember is "Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep" (PASS) when using a fire extinguisher. You pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle and sweep the nozzle back and forth across the fire to put it out. He also said that you should always position yourself between the fire and an exit to avoid getting trapped. In Applegate Hall of the Greensprings Residence Hall, Hickman filled the hallway with theatrical smoke to simulate a fire where students would have to evacuate. The RAs had to crawl on all fours through the hallway to the fire escape and then pull the fire alarm.  "Even though we knew it was a drill, it's still pretty frightening with all that smoke," said Derek Olsen, a first year RA and Junior from Roseburg. "I knew where I was going, but with the smoke, that hallway seems much longer." "I was at the end of the hall, so I opened the door to a wall of smoke," said senior and second-year RA Jon Unrein from Salem. "When I did this last year, I was near the exit, so it wasn't nearly as smokey. You kind of forget it's a drill and fee the need to get the heck out of there." "I feel like I better know what to expect if the real thing happens," Olsen added. RAs concluded their fire training with a Jeopardy-style game to test what they learned.  Email reporter Ian Hand at [email protected] or call him at 253-722-4071.
