I have advice for local folks who are affected by the Mylan Companies “Epipen” price-gouging. There are multiple low-cost and workable alternatives to spending hundreds of dollars for an Epipen injector for people needing emergency intramuscular injections of epinephrine for people with a tendency to have a life-threatening anaphylactic allergic reaction to bee/hornet stings, respiratory allergic reactions, etc. As I understand it, Mylan’s “Epipen” injectors deliver 0.3 mg of 1:1000 diluted strength of epinephrine into the muscle under the skin with each use. A package of two Epipen injectors, I hear, costs around $600 (Unbelievable to me, and must be bewildering and frightening to those who feel they must buy it or risk death). Local physicians can purchase 1 ml glass ampules of epinephrine of 0.1 mg/1:1000 concentration for $5 from Emergency Medical Products Co. online. Doctors can also purchase a 30 ml multiple-dose bottle of epinephrine of the same strength from the same company for slightly less than $75. Why are physicians not offering and arranging for their allergic patients to consider this cheaper alternative to Epipen? Maybe they are shouting, but I have heard nothing in the media from them yet. One hundred 3 cc syringes with narrow and short 25 gauge needles can be purchased by any doctor online for $30.57 from B D Decton Dickinson Co. These syringes can be fairly safely preloaded with the above epinephrine for injection by anyone with adequate and minimal instruction and willingness to inject themselves or others in the right place for delivery of the medication. Preloaded syringes can be kept safely refrigerated in schools, offices or work places and be immediately available for anaphylactic emergencies. Why does no one in our U.S. media system seem to understand, care or inform the general public of this low-cost alternative availability; a simple and less costly alternative. The media and political hype over the price-gouging is quite repugnant, but tends to make the general public feel further coerced to use Mylan’s “Epipen” rather reverting to much less costly alternatives. William J. Sager, M.D. Ashland Try an electric bike Ashland’s greenhouse gas emissions from road travel are 17 percent of the city’s total. I contribute to this number. Ashland High School students are asking all of us to make changes in our habits that contribute to GHG emissions. Breaking old patterns is not easy. Over the years I have written about patterns that could be broken and experiences I have had that resulted in saving money as well as reducing my carbon footprint. I have spent many years trying to reduce my driving. Walking — good exercise — seems to take forever if I need to get to a meeting on time, and riding the Schwinn up the hill was possible, but only if I kept repeating: 'This is good for you!' Approaching the ‘old old’ category, I have made an investment in an electric bike. Getting to the north end of Talent is a kick! If I continue this activity, the old car will last longer, the gas tank will stay full longer and my commitment to the younger generation to reduce my footprint will be on track. I bet you could rent an electric bike to see if it works for you! Louise D. Shawkat Ashland Supporting all I was shocked and saddened by how quickly things became polarized between OSF and Judi Honoré of Shakespeare Books. I wish to express my love and support for all participants in this dispute. I applaud OSF for moving so quickly to protect its actors from racist attacks and to encourage community discussion about the pervasiveness of racism in our society. And, I applaud Judi for being a stalwart defender of the First Amendment who has been so instrumental in fighting against racism and prejudice. OSF is not a bully and Judi is not a racist. I feel that both sides are motivated by love and a desire to stand up for what is right. Seemingly, that would make them natural allies but conflict and miscommunication bring up the wounds that we all carry and perpetuate discord and distortion. The only real solution is for both sides to sit down in open-hearted discussion, tempered by "the quality of mercy" for the humanity of each participant in the conflict. Meg Jefferson Ashland Cover the Libertarians I am a Bernie Dem and like many of us I’m not happy with my choices for president. Green Party candidate Jill Stein doesn’t have a lot of government experience, but the Libertarian presidential and vive presidential candidates are both RINO-Rebublicans from blue states. I would really like to see some media coverage of Gary Johnson and the Libertarian platform. Bob Rawlings Ashland Three questions Three questions of interest to Tidings readers. 1. Why is the Register-Guard not distributed to Southern Oregon? 2. Why is KSKQ not carrying the Thom Hartmann program? 3. I was told by a relative that Ashland's public schools are no longer teaching cursive writing in the primary grades. Is this true? And if so, why? Herbert Childs Ashland Is this who we are? He appeals to fear. There are many things to be fearful of in these times: climate change, terrorist threats and financial insecurity, to name a few. Trump’s speeches and interviews appeal to these fears and reveal a candidate who is a genuine racist, bigot and hatemonger. We also see a man with no intellect beyond soundbites that attract racist, bigoted, hate-filled voters. Supporters of Donald Trump urge us to watch his speeches and ignore the media because the media is biased. The mainstream media is biased — but their bias actually favors Trump as they fail to hold him fully accountable for his ignorant, hate-filled campaign. What has happened to reason and logic? The world of Trump is not the world of a generous, intelligent, caring electorate. Just looking into the not-too-distant past reveals men of his ilk and the results were disastrous. Of course, if Trump does not win, he will claim voter fraud. It is a national embarrassment that anyone of such low moral character is able to achieve such public support. What is amazing and disgraceful is that Trump enjoys any support at all. Is this who we are? Really?
