--> --> Trainer of '81 Belmont winner dead at 80 NEW YORK (AP) - Luis Barrera, who trained 1981 Belmont Stakes winner Summing, died of a heart attack today. He was 80. Barrera, the brother of Hall of Fame trainer Laz Barrera, was found unconscious at his Belmont Park barn, NYRA racing secretary Mike Lakow said. Barrera was born in Havana, Cuba, on April 15, 1922, and moved to the United States when he was 14. He began his career as a trainer in 1966, and saddled his first winner, Betty Bull, at Garden State Park that year. He helped Laz condition 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed and 1976 Kentucky Derby champion Bold Forbes. Summing's win in the Belmont spoiled Pleasant Colony's bid to win the Triple Crown. He is survived by three daughters, Briana, Louisa, and Carmen, the NYRA director of horsemen's relations; a son, Tommy; and brothers Willie and Angel. Information on funeral arrangements wasn't available immediately. Laz Barrera and another brother who was a thoroughbred trainer, Angelo, both died in 1991. Email your...
