Ida C. Burns Ida Cora Burns, 92, of Ashland died at 12:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22 at Ashland Community Hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Burns was born Nov. 22, 1910, to Sarah E. and Schuyler Gunter in Ashland. The family moved to Grants Pass in 1922. Mrs. Burns graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1929 and Oregon State University in 1934. She began working that year as librarian at Ashland Junior High School and later accepted a teaching position at Ashland High School. In June, 1937, she married Ashland resident Philip Lee Burns and moved from the Rogue Valley for eight years before returning to Ashland in 1945. In 1962 Mrs. Burns returned to teaching at AMS and was Dean of Girls until retiring in 1972. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Ashland Pinochle Club, and volunteered at the Ashland Community Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Mrs. Burns enjoyed travel, camping, gardening, arts and crafts, quilting, and crocheting. Survivors include five sons, Richard Burns of Roseburg; Bruce Burns of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jerome Burns of Kearneysville, W. Va., Martin Burns of Ashland, and Philip Burns of Orting, Wash; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, Clyde, and Merrill Burns; and two sisters, Myra Bailey and Beatrice Cornilsen. Arrangements are under the direction of Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
