Ashland police reported at least four personal checks worth a total of $500 were taken from the drop box during December, with the thefts reported over Christmas weekend. Fraudulent activity was reported on at least two of the bank accounts since the theft, and there could be more the police haven't received reports on yet. "If you popped your bill in there in December, give the city a call," said Ashland police Deputy Chief Warren Hensman. "Or just check your bank." Investigators are in the process of getting records and security-camera footage from the affected banks. The drop box has been removed, because police believe it may have been damaged or tampered with during the thefts. "It was certainly manipulated to where it clearly compromised the integrity of the box," Hensman said. Anyone who had an Ashland utility payment stolen from the drop box — or those with information about the case — are asked to call Ashland police at 541-482-5211. They can also call an anonymous tip line at 541-552-2333 or email [email protected] . To verify your utility payment has been received, call the city at 541-488-6004.
