BOYS SOCCER Ashland survives Liberty in PK shootout Heyden has two saves in shootout as Grizzlies advance to state quarterfinals By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 6, 2014 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 6, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News It took 20 minutes of overtime, four penalty kicks and two PK saves, but the Ashland High boys soccer team is headed to the elite eight for the first time since 2009. Ashland senior goalkeeper Tejas Leie Heyden blocked two of four penalty kicks and the Grizzlies nailed all four of their own to edge Liberty 1-0 in the first round of the OSAA Class 5A boys soccer state tournament Wednesday at North Mountain Park. By winning the shootout 4-2, the fifth-seeded Grizzlies earned a quarterfinal date with fourth-seeded Woodburn on Saturday, with the winner of that game advancing to the Tuesday’s semifinals. “It’s just unbelievable how this group of boys finds a way to win,” Ashland coach Brad Roupp said. “We started (the season) in such a hole when we were 0-3. We talked about digging out of a hole and we started digging. Getting to 1-3, 2-3 and finally at 3-3 we said , ‘Now, we’re going to start building a mound.’ We kept the shovels and we started building a mound.” The mound was in serious danger of collapsing Wednesday. Both Ashland (10-5), the Midwestern League champions, and Liberty (7-7-2), the Northwest Oregon Conference’s fourth-place team, had plenty of chances to win the game in regulation and overtime but were thwarted by timely defense and outstanding goalkeeping. For Heyden, nothing changed in the shootout but the aid of stadium lights, which were switched on just in time for the dramatic conclusion. On the Grizzlies’ sideline, Roupp said he took a democratic approach to the shootout. “We went to our seniors and we said, ‘Seniors, this is all yours,’” Roupp said. “And we asked who wanted to shoot and quite a number of them raised their hands. So we took all the guys that wanted to take shots and they selected their order. So the players did everything. They made it happen.” After Liberty won the coin toss and elected to shoot first, Heyden blocked the Falcons’ first shot, darting to his left to give the Grizzlies an immediate advantage. Ashland’s David Lee made it count by hammering a no-doubter past Liberty’s keeper for a quick 1-0 lead. Liberty scored on its second PK, but Gabe Lehrberger ripped home Ashland’s second as well to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 advantage. Then, Heyden did it again, deflecting a rocket with a punch over his head. Freshman Ben Lucero came through to put Ashland ahead 3-1, and Liberty followed with its second make to set up the first score-and-advance attempt for the Grizzlies. David Lehrberger didn’t squander the opportunity, steering the ball to the right of the keeper and lifting the Grizzlies to their first quarterfinal appearance in five years. “At that point, we were holding (the players) back,” Roupp said of the emotion before the game-clinching shot. “They were waiting to celebrate and all we were saying was, ‘Don’t get hurt, we have another game.’ We made a commitment to each other that we were coming to practice (today) at 4 o’clock and at 4 o’clock we’ll be there. “What an effort. We’ve had three overtimes where we scored in overtime and the boys came into this game saying they’re going to fight to the very end. And they did.” Roupp credited the defense with disrupting Liberty just enough to keep the game going and the offense with creating multiple scoring opportunities, including a pair of near-misses in overtime. And, he added, Heyden was simply spectacular. “(Heyden) played the game of his life,” Roupp said. “He played an exceptional game. Liberty came and they had an arsenal ready to shoot and they took lots of shots. Our defense was able to hold them off enough that those shots weren’t perfect most of the time, but (Heyden) just played an amazing game. He shut them down.”  Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-776-4469 or [email protected].
