Historians focus on Lithia Springs Events are scheduled from Monday to Friday, culminating with the annual awards ceremony. The Ashland Historic Commission will be honoring the city's many historic treasures this week. This year the Historic Commission will focus on Lithia Springs - from its source along the banks of Emigrant Creek to its many outlets in the downtown area, including Lithia Park and the Plaza. Since the springs were discovered in the 1880's, many entrepreneurial efforts evolved in an attempt to capitalize on the "medicinal values" the Lithia water was said to have. Today, evidence of these projects can still be found. For more 145 years, Ashland's history has been reflected in the city's downtown core. The downtown area has developed into and remains the most important historic, commercial, aesthetic and cultural area of the city, local historians say. Design standards adopted by the Ashland City Council in August of 1998 have helped ensure the historic nature of many parts of the downtown. The Railroad, Downtown, Skidmore-Academy and Siskiyou-Hargadine districts have all been added to the National Historic Register. In addition to the four National Register districts, Ashland has 49 individual listings on the National Register of Historic Places. The Planning Department has a list of the properties. City-owned National Register properties include: Ashland Municipal Powerhouse located in Ashland Canyon, Lithia Park, the women's Civic Improvement Club Building (also known as the Community Center) located at 59 Winburn Way, Ashland Cemetery located on East Main and Morton Streets, Mountain View Cemetery located on Normal Avenue and Ashland Street, and the Hargadine Cemetery located on Sheridan and Walnut Streets. Ashland National Register properties also can be viewed on the Internet. Ashland is one of the featured communities in the National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary.
