The visiting Millers held Ashland scoreless in the second quarter and hit enough free throws down the stretch to pull out a 30-24 victory. The win improves Springfield to 13-7 overall and 8-1 in the Midwestern League and dropped the Grizzlies to 7-13 and 0-10. Ashland cut Springfield’s lead to four points with about three minutes to go and had a shot to inch closer but couldn’t connect. “We drew up a play and had a great look but it didn’t go down,” Ashland coach Ashley Hafner said. Georgia Williams scored seven points and Hannah Teixeira five to pace the Grizzlies. Freshmen Alex Crane and Mya Elder-Hammond also played well. Hafner said the Grizzlies hustled and for the most part executed too, but failed to knock down open jumpers against the stingy Millers, who have now held six opponents to 26 points or less. “I think it was a good game on both sides,” Hafner said. “They play in-your-face man-to-man defense and our girls battled. We’ve been losing the last few games, but we’re a different team than we were at the beginning of league. I’m proud of them.” Ashland is off until traveling north next Friday for a game against North Eugene. Boys Basketball At Eugene, Springfield used a big third quarter to squash Ashland’s upset bid and beat the Grizzlies 63-40 Friday at Springfield High School. Ashland scored early in the third to get within three, but Springfield forced a series of turnovers and by the end of the quarter led by 17. “We just didn’t value the basketball,” Ashland coach Keithan Gregg said. Ashland (9-10, 3-7 Midwestern League) was led by Collin Malcolm’s 11 points. Dominic Meads added eight and Jack Feinberg seven. Springfield (13-6, 8-1) was led by Talon Harrington (16 points) and Alec Cook (15).
