Phillips Field. Arsenal scored a goal in stoppage time to tie Fuego, 2-2. Robert Petetit | For the Tidings The Southern Oregon Fuego and La Liga Del Valle Arsenal ended their Saturday exhibition in a draw. Although the match ended 2-2, Arsenal was taking the bow at the end of the game while Fuego players walked off the field wondering what went wrong. Fuego, which is now 1-1-2, out-shot Arsenal 18-8 and trailed for only 22 of the match’s 90 regulation minutes. Arsenal took an early lead after controlling the opening kickoff and scoring in the fourth minute of play. Twenty-two minutes later, Fuego responded with a Rael Hirning goal off a direct kick from just outside the penalty box. The 1-1 tie held up until intermission. After the break, Fuego, which has made a habit of turning on the afterburners right after halftime, did it again. “We always try to come out strong in the second; we did that today,” said Fuego co-captain Iman Siadat. “We possessed the ball well and developed a lot of chances.” Fuego controlled the ball for the majority of the second half, continuously testing an Arsenal defense that picked up two yellow cards and one red in the match. “Our defense played really well today,” Arsenal head coach David Solorio said. “They played all-out; without them, we wouldn’t have been in the game.” Fuego midfielder Mike Kuchman put a head on a Rael Hirning cross in the 82nd minute to forge a 2-1 lead. However, in stoppage time, Arsenal laid an assault on the Fuego goal, finding the equalizer three minutes into the extra minutes. The game ended in a tie, but the two teams showed much different reactions to the decision. While Arsenal players took a bow to their fan section, Fuego midfielder Dan Hathaway looked on with his hands on his hips. “I’m disappointed; we all are,” Hathaway said. “We had the win, and they slipped one by us right at the end.” “I felt like we dominated this game,” Siadat added. “We out-shot them, we outplayed them, but you can make excuses all day long. We let that last goal by; that’s the way the cookie crumbles in soccer.” The Fuego scheduled the exhibition with Arsenal earlier this week after complications with their scheduled game on Wednesday. The Arsenal responded confidently. “We got the call late, but we wanted to give the fans a game,” Solorio said. “We came out here a bit unprepared, so today was a good game for us. We just came out and played some soccer.” Erik Hidle is a correspondent for the Ashland Daily Tidings.
