I’m not worried so much about my house, but if the wind picks up,” said Cici Brown, who lives on Scenic Drive, west of the burn. “I can’t believe they’d do a control burn on a day like this.” They didn’t, however. Crews from Summit Forests were contracted by Todd Hoffman to do controlled burning on his land above Strawberry Lane Monday to reduce potentially flammable debris. “We’ve actually been burning up there off and on for the last week or so,” Scott Nelson, the company president said. Summit Forests employees patrol the area when they finish pile burning, he said. Dry, windy conditions on Wednesday rekindled the smoldering remains of the preventative burn, causing a wildfire that took six hours to stamp out. “Basically, what happened is it did jump their fire lines,” said Jackson County Fire District 5 engineer Bob Holt. “They contained the fire themselves.” A Summit Forests patrol spotted the fire and called crews back to the site. Within an hour, 20 people were fighting the fire. Ashland firefighters responded to the blaze, which was outside of city limits, but Summit Forests did not need their assistance. The fire didn’t threaten any homes or other structures. “It stayed all within the boundaries,” Nelson said. “It was all within his property, it just crept around for a couple hours.” Wednesday was not a controlled burn day. Open burn season began March 1 and on any day when there is enough air movement in the Valley, residents in the county, Talent and Phoenix can legally burn debris on their property until the state declares fire season in late spring or early summer.
