WE members have been offering a monthly meal and clothing essentials — warm clothing in the cold months, socks and other various items as needed. Friday, just in time for Mother’s Day weekend, volunteers are going to begin to offer the homeless a chance to reconnect with families and friends,whenever that is possible, and their original communities. In a statement, WE said the monthly meals have been a community partnership with several other organizations and made possible the building of a sense of community between housed and unhoused people. More than a dozen people have donated hundreds of new greeting cards and postage stamps for the letter-writing effort. At the community meal, WE will have a table set up so homeless friends can choose to write home if they'd like. Volunteers will be on hand to assist. “That homeless guy who stands on the corner holding a sign is someone’s brother, somebody else’s son,” says Vanessa Houk, the lead organizer. “When you stop and think about the family on the other end of that equation, the Mom who will spend Mother’s Day wondering if he’s still alive, is why this is so important. It’s also something that isn’t offered to homeless people and we’re curious to see how it will be received.” The homeless card project and community meal will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, May 6, in Railroad Park on A Street at 7th Street in Ashland.
