The Bee City USA approved pollinator garden program encourages homeowners, businesses, schools, organizations, farmers and gardeners to create pollinator habitats that support pollinator populations. Qualifying gardens will be recognized with a Bee City USA-Ashland garden sign. Pollinators, including native bees, honeybees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and beetles are in decline. These species struggle due to habitat loss and the overuse of pesticides. Pollinator gardens can help. The Ashland Bee City subcommittee encourage landowners to consider planting flowering landscapes, or participate to acknowledge work they’ve already done. To thrive, pollinators need a place to live (holes, or undisturbed areas of rocks and grasses work best), year-round forage (pollen and nectar from flowering plants, preferably native), a water source and space free from synthetic pesticides. With these points in mind, depending on the plants selected, gardens can be created to attract butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and other pollinator species. See the Bee City USA-Ashland website at ashland.or.us/BeeCity for lists of pollinator plants appropriate for this area. The Bee City USA subcommittee is seeking garden nominations for gardens which provide complete and crucial habitat for pollinators. Upon submission, a Bee City USA volunteer will visit the nominated garden and each qualifying garden will be recognized with a “Bee City USA-Ashland Approved” sign. Pollinator gardens that are visible from the street will have the opportunity to be included in Ashland’s Pollinator Garden tour map. (A $10 donation is suggested to cover the cost of the signs.)
