Peter has been my neighbor for nearly a decade, and I know first-hand his dedication to his family, our street, and the wider community. He is thoughtful, patient, and graced with abundant energy and cheerfulness. He's courageous - remember his willingness to take on incumbent Greg Walden in a David-and-Goliath contest for Congress two years ago? He can say hard things in a nice way and disagree without demeaning, just the qualities we need in the state legislature where collaborating with opponents is a lost art. He wants us all to live as neighbors, as we did in the Oregon of our youth. We are lucky to have the choice of Buckley for state representative. Jim S. Martin Ashland A sincere thanks In the end of Octorber my wife and I lost our 22 week old son. Do the this and other things going on in our lives we are living out of state temporarily. Upon returning home at the end of January I spoke to a teller at my bank. This is a thank you to the wonderful people that work at the Bank of America branch on Ashland street. Upon hearing of our loss the employees went out and purchased a card and wrote us a wonderful and thoughtful note and everyone signed it. I was so supprised by their concern... they only know us from doing business there. This little act, typical of the service I have always received from them, and around this town has come to mean the world to my wife and I. The care is typical of the folks of our community and I just want to thank them for their kindness. Michael and Lori Van Horn Ashland Letter about Atkins inaccurate The report that Dr. Atkins died obese wasn't from a "consumer advocacy group", though the Physicians� Committee for Responsible Medicine deliberately cultivates that image. PCRM promotes veganism and animal rights� they�re understandably unhappy about the popularity of low-carb diets. For the record, Dr. Atkins weighed 195 pounds when hospitalized after a fall. After several days in a coma, administration of fluids had ballooned him to 258 pounds. Obviously this had nothing to do with his diet. Heart disease has a genetic component - it's impossible to say whether Atkins� diet helped or hurt him. The PCRM claims that the diet is harmful may have inadvertently made a case for its safety. Despite actively soliciting horror stories among 20 million dieters over two decades, they pointed to one death and one serious illness, neither of which was demonstrably caused by the diet (as they admitted). Where are all the victims of this health menace? Vegetarianism is probably healthy, but it's simply untrue that every diet study over the last three decades "concluded that Americans should replace meat and dairy products in their diet with vegetables, fresh fruits, and whole grains." In truth, many nutritionists who don't like Atkins are also unenthusiastic about vegetarian diets. I'm not an Atkins follower, but different diets suit different people, and an imperfect diet may be better than the one it replaced. I find it odd that people get so angry over what other people eat. Dal Carver Ashland Dean's message continues Our belief in the power of the people to unite in moving the Insiders out and letting the People in was restored by Governor Howard Dean. Whoever wins the Democratic nomination is now assured that a campaign can fearlessly show a new direction for our country. We need Gov. Dean and his national convention delegates to keep his refreshing message from being silenced. We need a change to credibility in communication, to equal access to our federal government, to restoration of our international reputation for fair play and equal opportunity, and to inclusive international diplomacy. Governor Dean led the way, and his message for change is essential to our future.
