Blanked by Williams on five hits through the first seven innings, Marist finally broke through in the eighth when Kristen Behrends led off with a double and Anne Yates followed with a single. Both scored on wild pitches. Williams escaped further damage with three straight strikeouts to bring her total to 12 and leave the bases loaded, but Ashland (10-6, 4-4 MWL) couldn’t mount a rally against Burke in the bottom half. Burke allowed four hits and walked three for the Spartans (13-3, 7-2), who have won six straight. She struck out the first eight batters she faced and didn’t allow a hit until Ashland leadoff hitter Teresa Lehman led off the fourth with a double to left-center field. Lehman was left stranded at third. Williams gave up eight hits and five walks and escaped another bases-loaded jam in the sixth by striking out Yates. Ashland had runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, but left them stranded each time. Anay Philpott was 2-for-3, while Lehman and Carlee Conner had one hit apiece to lead the Grizzlies at the plate. Burke was 3-for-4 and Lauren Burke 2-for-4 for Marist. Prep Baseball At Eugene, Ashland couldn’t overcome eight errors in a 10-6 Midwestern League loss to Churchill on Tuesday at Churchill High School. Jerry Carroll was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and Steen Fredrickson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and also pitched the first five innings for the Grizzlies (11-4, 6-3 MWL), who have lost four straight. Down a run, Churchill (12-1, 5-1) scored five in the fourth, including a two-run double by Austin Fetters-Duffy and an RBI single by Ian Pargeter. After Carroll’s homer the Lancers brought in Zak Adams, who held Ashland to one hit over the last three innings. Also for Ashland, Caleb Bell was 1-for-3 with a two-run single in the fourth, when the Grizzlies rallied with four consecutive hits.
