ASHLAND HIGH SENIOR GUARD Alysse Carlson dribbles the ball upcourt during Tuesday night's game against the Crater Comets at Mountain Avenue Gym. Carlson and fellow senior guard Jamie Roupp (inset) combined to score 40 points, as Ashland went on an 8-0 run in overtime on its way to a 56-48 victory. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Except for one. "They're clutch," Ashland High head coach Ken Lathen said. "Everyone just did what we needed to have done when we needed to have it done." That was the Grizzlies again Tuesday, and this time Lathen could only shake his head and shrug his shoulders. Then smile. His Grizzlies pulled out another squeaker, this time a 56-48 overtime victory over the Crater Comets before another delirious crowd at Mountain Avenue Gym. The win allowed the Grizzlies to keep pace with North Medford atop the Southern Oregon Conference standings and gain some separation from the rest of the SOC pack. Both Ashland (10-8, 8-1 SOC) and North (17-2, 8-1) are three games ahead of third-place South Medford (11-8, 5-4) with five games left in the regular season. Crater sophomore guard Kenna Reiter sent the game into overtime by banking in a rebound putback as the buzzer sounded, tying the game at 48. The shot appeared too late, but after huddling, the referees ruled it good, turning Ashland's celebration into frustration. The call went from controversial to trivial in the four-minute extra session, however. That's when Ashland guards Jamie Roupp and Alysse Carlson took over, each drilling a 3-pointer from the left corner - they traded assists as well - to give the Grizzlies their biggest lead of the game with about two minutes to go. As good as Carlson and Roupp were - they combined for 40 points (Carlson 21 and Roupp 19), including all eight in OT - the Grizzly defense was even better, at least with the game on the line. Ashland pitched a shutout in the extra session and finally held Crater to one-shot possessions after the Comets dominated the offensive glass in regulation. "The team that lets down in overtime is the team that's going to go down and so we just didn't want to be that team," said Carlson, who also had three assists and three steals. "We knew we had to just stick together, work hard and just give it our all that last three minutes of the overtime and that's what we did." It was Ashland's first overtime game of the season, but not its first close game. The Grizzlies' first two league wins both were decided in the final seconds, and their win over Grants Pass last week was another barn-burner. "It's a really good win coming off a really hard loss [to North] and it helps our confidence," said Grizzly starting wing Josianne McDermott (eight points), one of two Ashland sophomores - the other was Hannah Sohl - who made major contributions. Like the last meeting between the two teams, which Ashland won on a last-second fastbreak bucket by Abeni Hill, Tuesday's game was a back-and-forth struggle. There were eight lead changes in the second half alone. Carlson provided the last when she quickly converted a backcourt steal into a layup with 1:56 to go in the fourth quarter, giving the Grizzlies a 47-46 lead. Sohl hit 1 of 2 free throws with 29 seconds left to make it 48-46. Crater called a timeout. That set up the wild sequence that led to overtime. The Comets missed two shots and grabbed three offensive boards before Reiter's follow. Roupp, who led Ashland with eight rebounds, said the Grizzlies didn't talk about whether or not the shot should have counted in the huddle before overtime. "It was more of just, this is a clean game right now," she said. "It's zero-zero and we had to forget about what just happened and come out and play the next four minutes." Lathen agreed. "I didn't dwell on that, because obviously you can't - it's over and done with," he said. "It didn't matter in the long run."
