Mt. Ashland’s ski season kicked off Friday with a crowd. More than 700 people hit the slopes to celebrate the start of the season, according to ski area General Manager Hiram Towle. In observation of “Day Onesie,” as the nonprofit ski area calls its opening day, skiers and snowboarders wearing one-piece snowsuits paraded around the mountain and were given first chairlift honors. All four lifts at the ski area are operating, though officials advise skiers and snowboarders to be aware of early season conditions this weekend, which includes potentially unmarked hazards. As of Friday, the mountain had collected 34 inches of snow, including 13 inches in the past week. Friday’s weather service forecast called for partly sunny skies for today with a high around 40 and wind of about 11 mph. Another 1 to 3 inches of snow are forecast to fall after 10 a.m. Sunday, which is also expected to be blustery with winds in the low 20s but gusts of up to 37 mph.
