She was 89. Known for the wit, insight, and honesty of her popular newspaper columns, “At My Age,” Patty will be remembered not only for her love of life, but for her ability as a writer to share the joys--and the pains--of everyday life with a comforting twist of humor. Commenting on aging in her column, she wrote that her “new group’s greatest benefit is that none of us worry about dying young." Born in Hermiston, Ore., Patty moved to Southern California with her husband, Al, in 1949. She always referred to her marriage with Al as “the best decision I ever made.” While living in Riverside, California, Patty was instrumental in developing a volunteer organization at the local general hospital, established a halfway house for people fresh out of mental institutions, gave great parties, and raised three children almost as a sideline. In the late ‘60s she and Al took a leap of faith and moved to Kabul, Afghanistan, for Al to take a position as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps in that country. Ever the adventurer, she proceeded to teach English, get lost (and found) where foreigners rarely ventured, helped a Peace Corps team of vaccinators, hosted sick and home-sick Peace Corp volunteers -- and gave great parties. Patty lost Al, her husband of 70 years, just last June. She is survived by her three children, Nancy (Norm) Menzie, of Placerville, Calif.;, Tim (Terri) Perrin, of W. Kelowna, British Columbia; and Carrie Perrin, also of Placerville, Calif. She has four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. In her honor, and in recognition of her great parties, her family is giving one last party and holding a celebration of her life on her 90 th birthday, June 6, 2015 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland, Ore., at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road SW, Lilburn, Ga., 30047.. The last word goes to Patty, who never forgot what was truly important in life: “It’s a beautiful day. Let’s pack a lunch and go for a hike.” From “At My Age” columns originally published in the Ashland Gazette from 1991 - 2002: On romance: “I hate to admit it, but romance, Clark Gable, and my knees are all dead.” On the cost of harsh words: “Words can add up. A rash statement here and another there and the first thing I know, I’m three sizes larger.” On the value of friendship: “As I get older, I have come to believe that friends are like clothes, and that life has limited closet space.” DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 16, 2015 at 2:00 AM Updated May 18, 2015 at 8:56 AM You may leave your condolences or share memories by signing the Guest Book here » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
