OUR VIEW Our view: SOU reaches out to downtown DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 30, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 30, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Ashland businesses have hundreds of potentially new customers come to town every September and now, thanks to a program by Southern Oregon University, those businesses have an opportunity to make a great first impression. Called "SOU Loves Ashland," the program is part of an expanded freshman orientation that's intended to help ease new students' transitions to the school.  In short, it helps to show the students why Ashland is a place where they can be comfortable and feel like part of the community, rather than a subset of citizens cloistered in one corner of town. Students in the program attended a program at Lithia Park Saturday and then spread out into the downtown area to have a "passport" validated by at least 10 different businesses from among the 85 who signed up. To add a bit of emphasis to the effort, the students walked from campus to the downtown to see that they don't have to embark on some daunting trek to reach the center of town. Ashland does have much to offer, from coffee shops to restaurants and small businesses of myriad sizes and types. Students who live on campus can develop a sort of "island" mentality and remain in that isolated community rather than stretch out to become part of the larger community. Those who do will miss much of what makes Ashland a special place. Congratulations to the university for reaching out, and to the businesses for being receptive to the idea. it could be the beginning of many beautiful relationships.
