It's a good thing it didn't. The Legislature considered imposing a two-year ban on the growing of hemp, a measure that was supported by marijuana growers, who fear a neighboring hemp farm could take the high out of their crop. It was approved by the House, where Ashland Democrat Peter Buckley carries great sway as a co-chair of the Ways and Means Committee. But the Senate rejected it, agreeing with Sen. Lee Beyer, D-Portland, who said he had "a little bit of a concern with the Legislature getting into the business of telling farmers what crops they should grow. Hemp and pot have been under the thumb of laws that consider cannabis and any relative to be evil weeds. Regardless of what you think about marijuana with its intoxicating effects, it has always been a head-scratcher that hemp was put on the banned list. Hemp can be used to make clothing, rope, paper, foods, fuel, soap and more. What you cannot make with it is an intoxicating drug, because it lacks any significant amount of the high-producing cannabinoids . Marijuana growers fear hemp will harm their crop. There's a solution: Work together to avoid planting the crops next to each other. Some say we're on the cusp of creating a great cannabis industry. That may be true, but that industry should make room for the cannabis known as hemp.
