The Grizzlies, who improved to 8-1, will take on Myrtle Point, the defending Class 2A state champions, in the tourney championship game 3 p.m. today at Marshfield High. "The goal for the game was to play with intensity for 32 minutes; we got about 28," AHS head coach Steve Humann said. "We felt we executed better than the night before and the level of intensity was good. Defensively, we played very well." Huyett scored a game-high 14 points and Carlson added 11 to pace the Grizzlies, who have won six straight. Also for Ashland, junior post Abeni Hill scored eight and freshman post Whitney Chase seven. Today's game marks Ashland's final tune-up for its Southern Oregon Conference season, which begins Friday night at Eagle Point (7-3). "Well, whether they're ready or not, here it is," Humann said. "I just think we're looking forward to it. We've built for this. Everybody knows their role on the team - that's what December is for. One of my main concerns was our bench, and Bailey Hasty and Whitney Chase have stepped forward and Jaime Roupp as a starter is playing extremely fundamental basketball." The Eagle Point game starts at 7 p.m. Ashland's first SOC home game is Tuesday against Klamath Union.
