Sen. Voinovich has become a modern hero in my eyes and made me realize that the Republicans want their party back in the same way the American public wants their country back. The Grand Old Party has been taken over by right wing extremists with an agenda that runs contrary to the traditions of the GOP. We have always admired the party that stood for conservative spending, keeping government out of our private lives, smaller government and individual rights and freedoms. Today’s Republican administration gives us record deficit spending, congressional actions on individual life and death cases, growing government and reduction of civil liberties and even torture. Today, I find myself feeling sorry for a party that has been overtaken, corrupted, shamed and manipulated by a small group of powerful extremists. These are dark days in the history of the Republican Party but with heroic men like Sen. Voinovich in our government, I am confident that both the party and our country can and will recover.
