Between offerings from the YMCA, the university, the City of Ashland and a host of other groups running camps and other activities for kids, the "I'm bored" whines will be absent all summer long. The Daily Tidings compiled a listing of the day, residential and athletic camps in the Ashland area. Editor's Note: This is the first in a two-part series highlighting summer camp opportunities for children. Look for the sports camps in Saturday's edition. Residential camps The YMCA offers the Outback Adventure Resident Camp for kids in grades three to eight. Participants spend a week at Box R Ranch. The camp will run Aug. 2 to 6 and cost $215-$250. For more information, call 541-482-9622. The Girl Scouts will have their annual series of camps at Lake of the Woods for girls ages 6 to 17. Participants need not be members of the Girl Scouts to attend any of the five one-week-long camps, which cost $195. Camps begin July 4, and each week will have a different theme. For more information, call 1-800-433-9288. The Native American Youth Academy will be July 17 to 24 for students grades five to 12 at Southern Oregon University. The program aims to immerse Native American youth in a college setting and open up learning and career possibilities. For more information, call 541-552-8256. Southern Oregon University Youth Programs will have Academy 2004, a camp for talented and gifted students in grades five to eight. Two sessions will be in mid-June. Academy 2004 offers classes, lectures, cultural experiences and recreational activities. The camp costs are $375 to $575. For more information, call 541-552-6047. Southern Oregon University offers Academia Latina for Hispanic students in grades six to eight for a week in August. Academia Latina focuses on challenging area youth with creative, bilingual instructors and exciting activities. For more information, call 541-552-6047. Sea Camp of Oregon will take kids ages 10 to 13 to Charleston, Ore., for five days in August. Two sessions will be offered where students will learn about ocean ecosystems while staying in the residence halls at the Oregon Institute of marine biology. The camp costs $445. Day camps Garfield Park offers free organized activities for all ages of kids seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include arts and crafts, games, contests and play in the fountains. For more information, call 541-488-5340. Southern Oregon University's Oren Writing Project will conduct a nature writer's camp at North Mountain Park for kids ages 10-14. The camp runs July 5 to 9 and costs $50. For more information, call 541-552-6627. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum offers morning day camps for five- and six-year-olds and afternoon camps for kids ages 6-9. The camps focus on forensic science, flying objects, backyard creatures, physics and the science of ceramics. The camps will run four weeks out of the summer and cost $110 per week. Four one-week sessions will be held in July and early August with a plethora of classes for students to pursue. Cost is $124-$248 per session. For more information, call 541-552-6047. The Southern Oregon University Youth Program will offer classes throughout the summer in art, college prep, computers/video, dance/music/theater, literature/creative writing, recreation and sports, science/natural history and strategy games/math/engineering. Fees vary. For more information call 541-552-6047. Helga's Playhouse, located in downtown Ashland, offers both a Doll Camp and a Miniature Worlds Camp this summer. The doll camp is open to girls ages 7 to 13, while the miniature worlds camp accepts boys and girls ages 5 to 10. The camps began Monday with the doll camp and alternate weeks through the summer. The YMCA will host the Discovery Camp for students entering kindergarten. The camp focuses on exploration, creativity and fun. It runs all summer and costs between $90 and $105 per week. The Siskiyou Field Institute, in conjunction with the staff at North Mountain Park, will have two Exploring Nature day camps for students in grades 2 to 6. The camp will include games, crafts, hands-on science and two field trips. The two sessions offer different activities and trips. The $110 camps will be June 21 to 25 and June 28 to July 2. The Siskiyou Field Institute will have a two-day program for families studying the 113-plus butterfly species in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. The Country Schoolhouse will offer a summer preschool program for students ages three and up. The camp will run Monday to Thursday mornings from July 21 to Aug. 19.
