Buoyed by strong individual speakers — three earned first-place honors, another trio placed and five others were named finalists — the team captured first place at the Whitman College Tournament in Walla Walla, Wash., last week. Eagle (Idaho) High and Gig Harbor (Wash.) H.S. finished second and third behind the Grizzlies. Mina Shahin won the senior division of interpretive reading, a combination of poetry and prose. Among the junior division competition, Jason Abelsohn was victorious in impromptu speaking and Austin Harfst captured editorial commentary. On the debate side, Abelsohn and Kyle Lachmund advanced to the semifinals of the senior division policy debate. Kelsey Mills and Krystal Rountree moved to the semis of the novice division. In the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Shahin competed in the senior quarterfinals and Clayton Hormel advanced to the junior quarterfinals. In parliamentary debate, Abelsohn, Harfst and Sterling Cooley were each in the first-place close-out of the junior division. In the student congress, John Lion finished third and Hunter Gimbel was fifth in the senior division. Taran Cross (second) and Justine Shatney (third) placed in junior competition.
