Letters to the Editor, Feb. 18 Saturday Feb 18, 2017 at 12:01 AM Newsletter inappropriate I was dismayed to read the John Muir school newsletter from principal Rebecca Gyarmathy. She is using her position and school resources to promote her own political views. John Muir is a public school, and principals are not allowed to use the school's resources for their own political agenda. Parents and Oregon taxpayers demand accountability for her actions. Chris Barrow Ashland A lie is a lie To be or not to be? To be a lie or not to be a lie? Words have meaning, and how we communicate their usage has significance. A lie is a known untruth. Yet we continue to accept the words of individuals who repeatedly make statements without bothering to check facts as the truth. How about the circulation of fake news suggesting that there has been no global warming for a decade and that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been fudging the data? I have been disappointed with the media and our political representatives’ failure to challenge these untruths and when the evidence is clear to correct the untruth. Recently, I have seen a glimmer of hope; some media are now questioning facts that are untrue and openly refuting the statements. I still haven’t heard them say what it really is — a lie. We need to hold our politicians to the standard of truth; their silence condones this behavior as acceptable. We too, the public, have a responsibility to check the facts. Are these statements true? Until we call a lie a lie and strive for truth, how can we trust one another? M. Trocker Talent
