While the center is not financially sustainable in its existing form, supporters should explore options for saving it. A year ago, SOU's student government voted to stop supporting the center directly with student activity fees, opting instead to provide student parents $400 a month for child care. The plan was to extend operations year-round and open enrollment to non-student parents. That change happened starting last fall, but it wasn't enough to put the center on sound financial footing. The center's closure, scheduled for June 13, means not just the loss of a quality day care trusted by parents. It means students with children, many of them struggling single parents, must try to find child care elsewhere. Access to child care is crucial for single parents working to improve their prospects by earning a degree. For some parents, adding another obstacle could mean abandoning their college plans. That's a loss for them and the community at large. Student leaders say they want to help, and SOU President Roy Saigo reportedly has said he would consider a viable plan if one is presented. Parents may have to agree to accept less than the nine full-time staffers and free meals the center now offers.
