The logging that is occurring there represents an unprecedented assault on "protected" old growth reserves. This operation may be declared illegal during the pending court proceedings. Rather than waiting for the ruling, John West has opted to cut down as many trees as possible before then. Protesters are simply attempting to delay this operation until the courts can weigh in. John West is highly motivated to expedite the logging operation in order to cut down as many trees as possible before the court renders a decision. John West's interests are being subsidized by the dedication of a massive assembly of law enforcement support to accelerate arrests of non-violent protesters who are attempting to delay the operation. The timber industry is also highly invested in this operation because the larger issue is precedent. The Fiddler Mountain operation is the first in a series of imminent projects that allow logging in protected old-growth reserves, including a number of pristine roadless areas in our National Forests. Let's see, we now are talking in this nation about how much torture and by what means is just the right amount. Millions of dollars of tax-payer money is being spent for government sponsored "news stories," a practice that once appalled us when practiced by the Soviet Union. The United States has become the greatest debtor nation in the history of the world. We will drill for oil in a pristine national wildlife refuge rather than practice energy conservation. Paul Wolfowitz, who helped us rush to war in Iraq, and could not tell a Senate Committee how many casualties have been suffered there by our military personnel, will be handed the helm of the World Bank, an institution that theoretically stands for international cooperation. And John Bolton, an imperialist who eagerly shows his contempt for other nations, will represent us at the United Nations. The "democracy" being spread in the Middle East is a weed patch, not a flower garden - except of course in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the Arab Emirates where our government prefers monarchies, including the continuing suppression of women's rights.
