--> --> Fire tower collapses BEND (AP) - An 83-foot fire tower on Black Butte collapsed under the weight of heavy snow earlier this month, officials from the Sisters Ranger District said Wednesday. The tower, which was used to spot wildfires during the summer until 1990, apparently collapsed on or around Dec. 9, when the Sisters Ranger Station got a call saying it was no longer visible. On Dec. 11, Glen Corbett and Kirk Metzger hiked to the summit and took a photo showing the disintegrated structure. The tower, which was built in 1934, was condemned in 1990. Maret Pajutee, ecologist for the Sisters Ranger District, said parts of the historic structure could be salvaged and recycled as a nature platform or shelter for hikers. Email your...
