But, as with any community, there is a transient element among Ashland's homeless, a group of mostly young males who have made their presence known locally in a variety of unpleasant ways. They aggressively panhandle, asking for money, food and, in at least one case, a passerby's shoes. They can be confrontational when their requests are denied. They have directed lewd comments toward passing women. Ashland Police Chief Tighe O'Meara says his officers have relatively few problems with the city's resident homeless population, but an increasing number of run-ins with and reports about some of the transients, dubbed "travelers." Those actions are not just a threat to the livability of Ashland, but to its economic well-being, as complaints have also been lodged by tourists, who say their visits were marred by the rude actions of the transients. Ashlanders can weigh in on this issue in a listening session with City Council members from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the council chambers at 1175 E. Main St. There are no off-the-shelf, ready-to-roll solutions for this, but there are answers that will develop when city leaders, police, social service providers and the public come together. It's a community issue demanding a community response.
