A opens right on time Steady winter weather allows ski area to open up one day before the average start time By Alan Panebaker Ashland Daily Tidings Mt. Ashland Ski and Snowboard Resort opened this morning to bluebird skies, packed powder conditions and the usual line for season passes. “The crew was here until late last night getting everything ready,” Special Events Manager Mike Dadaos said. “It’s a little backed up right now, but it’ll calm down.” Ian Reid, a biologist for the U.S. Forest Service in Talent, prepares for his first run of the season this morning at the top of the Windsor chairlift at the Mt. Ashland Ski and Snowboard Resort. Alan Panebaker | Ashland Daily Tidings As the mountain traditionally opens around Dec. 10, the resort celebrated opening a day ahead of schedule with blue skies to boot. With about a 30-inch base at the bottom of the mountain and about 60 inches at the summit, a sizeable hoard of skiers and snowboarders was already on the mountain by 9:15 a.m. Ian Reid, a fisheries biologist for the U.S. Forest Service in Talent, took the day to use his season pass and warm up his legs for the first runs of the season. “As far as the weather goes, it’s unbeatable,” Reid said. “We’ve had deeper snow before on opening day, but it’s still unbelievable.” With the entire mountain open and rails and fun boxes set up in the terrain park at the base of the mountain, Mount Ashland is off to a promising start to the season. The only problem for Ashland physician Jo Jenner and her daughter Nahanni Lukes was braving the line to have their pictures taken for season passes. Waiting in line with about 40 other riders, the two patiently nudged their way to the front. “I kind of wished they had opened last weekend,” Jenner said. As the people in the lodge tried their patience to keep down the anxiety of those first turns of the year, Jenner and Lukes (who took the day off school) were just excited to be here. “We finally get to go skiing,” Jenner said. Chairlifts will remain open today until 4 p.m. The ski area will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and then close until next Friday, Dec. 16, when seven-day-a-week skiing and snowboarding will begin. The ski area snow phone, 482-2754, provides daily updates on snow conditions.
